In partnership with our Premiere Artist Partner, Furious Flower Poetry Center, Harrisonburg City Public School students at Skyline and Thomas Harrison Middle Schools participated in a poetry workshop with Sudanese-American poet, Safia Elhillo. After reading her poetry, Safia led the students in a generative writing session where they created a poem based on prompts, questions, and descriptions about things, places, people, and moments that feel like home. At the end of the workshop, students were encouraged to share their work with the group. Supported by peers, a few brave students found their creative voice. Read more about this workshop in this Daily News Record article.

Chroma Collective

Chroma Collective spent time with students in both Keister and Stone Spring Elementary as part of an HCPS arts integration residency, blending visual arts with music making in a participatory, hands-on experience. The trio helped students explore the intersection of visual art concepts - line, color, movement, story - with music concepts and performance. During the session, students were prompted to paint based on the music they heard and created six pieces of artwork. At the end, students held up their favorite piece of artwork and the trio improvised, playing and singing music that represented the individual student artist creation.

Performing and commissioning music from historically marginalized composers, Chroma Collective aims to "immerse audiences in participatory, creative art and music making, inviting them to be artists themselves." We were thrilled to offer this experience for HCPS students to help them find the artist within themselves.

Why Are the Arts Important?

“The arts are an essential element of education, just like reading, writing, and arithmetic…music, dance, painting, and theater are all keys that unlock profound human understanding and accomplishment.”
–William Bennett, Former US Secretary of Education
