In partnership with our Premiere Performance Partner, the Forbes Center for the Performing Arts at James Madison University, 3rd graders from Rockingham County Public Schools attended a performance and workshop highlighting JMU Dance. This annual workshop explores contemporary dance, movement, and choreography, performed by talented student dancer members of the JMU Contemporary Dance Ensemble. Hosted by JMU Dance Program faculty, company dancers performed works from their show New Voices in Dance. The captivating performance brought together student choreographers, faculty, and guest artists to celebrate the power of creativity, movement, and collaboration. The dancers and faculty talked with the 3rd grade audience about elements of dance and movement to watch for during the performance. The students also had an opportunity to learn a short choreographed dance in their seat. Photo credit: Tall + Small Photography

Over the last two weeks, nearly 2,000 Harrisonburg City and Rockingham County middle schoolers experienced a live performance from world-renowned jazz musician Makinto in their schools. The Liberian-German composer, musician, singer, and storyteller played various instruments for students during his program "We Shall Overcome." The interactive and engaging residency took students on a musical and educational journey through the evolution of African American music and history.
